Looking for in-person art classes in Calgary, Alberta? Nadine Milton of Hop-A-Long Studio is now offering classes at the art studio in The Church of the Good Shepherd.
Each of these classes will focus on one medium or a variety of mixed media techniques depending on the topic. No drawing or art experience is required for these classes. The only requirement is to come with an interest in learning, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned mixed media artist!

Creative Art Journaling: Transforming Images into Stories
Date: October 9- November 13, 2024

Are you ready to unleash your creativity and transform your art journal with stunning visuals? Join us as we dive into six weeks of exciting techniques that will make your images pop off the page!
We’ll experiment with a variety of playful methods and explore unique materials like tissue paper, transparencies, and water slide paper. Combine these with vibrant paints, rich inks, and acrylic mediums to craft captivating projects full of texture and artistic flair. Get ready for a journey of discovery where each page becomes an expressive masterpiece!
Cost: $180 plus supplies
Custom Classes
There is a variety of custom classes that I teach throughout the year depending on interest. If you have a group of 5 or more, I’m happy to run a class for your and your friends. If there is enough interest in a topic during the year, I will create a special class for that topic. Here are some of the classes that I’m able to offer. If there is a topic you’d like to learn about, please contact me and I’d be happy to teach a class for your group.
Acrylic Paint Pouring
Interested in making an easy and unique piece of abstract art? Join me for this fun workshop where we will explore a variety of techniques using acrylic paint pouring. By the end of this class, you’ll have created two 10″x10″ unique acrylic paintings. No previous art experience is required.
Alcohol Inks
New to alcohol inks or looking for new inspiration? Learn how to use alcohol inks using a variety of techniques in this class. We will cover everything from simple blending techniques to more complex projects including how to layer and paint with alcohol inks. We will explore how to use alcohol inks on a variety of surfaces, how to mix them with other mediums and ways to use alcohol inks in a variety of projects.
Every class will start with a prompt to get your creative juices flowing before we delve into alcohol ink techniques. Whether you are interested in art journaling, card making or trying alcohol inks on a panel to frame, each of the techniques can be used on a variety of projects.
Introduction to Watercolor
We will be exploring watercolor and different ways we can use this versatile medium in our art journal. To help you gain confidence, we will explore a variety of foundational techniques for watercolor. These techniques include how to use watercolors, using watercolors on dry surfaces, wet-on-wet watercolor techniques, color mixing, glazing and layering watercolors. We will also touch on how to use watercolors to add color to pen and ink drawings.
Every class will start with a prompt to get your creativity flowing before we delve into the week’s technique. This class is ideal for art journaling, but these techniques can also easily be used on cards and other projects.
Introduction to Pan Pastels
Have you ever tried Pan Pastels? In this class, we will look at a variety of techniques for using pan pastels in your art projects. This is not only an introduction on how to use pan pastels, but also how you can mix them with a variety of other mediums in your art journal and creative projects. We will also talk about how to seal and layer these pastels to create beautiful effects in your art journal.
Art, Music & Poetry
Are you inspired by music and poetry? In this class we’ll explore the importance of music in our creative process and how it affects our art. We will be building and decorating a 6 inch by 9 inch art journal using a coptic stitch for binding. We’ll cover a variety of mixed media techniques in this class and will complete at least 4 art journal pages in our books. These mixed media techniques include collage, painting with acrylics, painting with a palette knife, using and altering acrylic mediums, and working with foil and alcohol inks.
What Nature Teaches Us
What does nature teach us about self-care? In this 6-week class we’ll explore the world around us and the lessons it can teach us about finding self-care in our lives. In this course you’ll learn how to make an accordion book with a dimensional mixed media cover and 4 journal layouts. Each page includes multiple techniques using acrylic paints, mediums, papers, napkins, waxes, and tissues.
Mixed Media Botanicals
Interested in mixed media botanicals? This class will cover watercolor and acrylic techniques and how to add mixed media elements to your botanical paintings. This 6 week class will cover different flowers, leaves, and trees that we can paint and add to our art journals, cards and other creative projects.
Cancellation Policy
Hop-A-Long Studio Limited reserves the right to reschedule or cancel classes due to instructor conflicts or insufficient registration. Minimum registration for each class may vary. We strive to give students at least 48 hours notice for cancellation of a class.
If the class is cancelled, we give you the option to take the class at a later date, a credit towards a future class, or a full refund.
If you cancel less than 7 days before the start of the class, you will forfeit your entire class fee. There will be a refund if your spot can be filled.
If you cancel more than 7 days before the start of the class, you will receive a credit towards a future class.
Refund Policy
If you would like to cancel your attendance, email your cancellation as soon as possible.
No refunds are provided if you need to cancel, but a credit will be applied towards a future workshop.
