Practicing Self-Care during the Holiday Season
Practicing self-care during the holiday season can be a bit of a challenge. It is a season filled with additional commitments. This can mean finding moments to relax and be mindful can be rare. It made me think of the self-care habits that I have in place over the holiday season that bring rest and restoration.
Self-Care through Handmade Holiday Cards
One of my self-care practices over the holiday season is making holiday cards. Not only do people love handmade cards, it can be an outlet for slowing things down and finding mindfulness. I find using a loose medium like watercolor is very relaxing. Working with my hands and concentrating on creating the cards lets my brain rest and wander. This allows me to process what has happened in my day in a more mindful way.
When I create cards, I usually do the same card design multiple times. This repetitive work is also a great way to allow the mind to slow down. Instead of constantly thinking about the next task or the next thing, it allows my mind to focus on a simple and relaxing task. Making cards helps me think through my day. I usually find by the end of a card making session I’m feeling more centered, more calm and more mindful.
I’ve created a very simple Christmas card to share with you. I’ve shown 3 different ways to do the focal image based off of the supplies you may have on hand. I hope that you find this project enjoyable and relaxing. That it will bring with it some ideas to work toward personal self-care and mindfulness.
