Preparing for a Pandemic Christmas
I have been reflecting on how preparing for a pandemic Christmas does not have to be sad. Christmas is going to feel different this year due to the pandemic. Many of us have felt the effects of this pandemic on our holidays and traditions. So how do we find ways of enjoying the time and perhaps finding joy and happiness despite the disruption?
Preparing for Christmas
I really enjoy the Christmas holiday season and my preparations usually start around mid- November. Preparing for a pandemic Christmas has been very different. With no work holiday parties, Christmas plays or concerts to attend, it leaves a strange feeling to the season. As the numbers rise in my city, there continues to be more restrictions on gatherings. I am waiting to see what family gatherings will look like this year.
This has changed a lot about the season of Christmas for me this year. I have to say that I do miss the parties and gatherings, but I know eventually things will go back to normal. Throughout this year many events that I usually attend are cancelled, including art classes and other events that I look forward to. I have learned to temper my expectations. I have had to realize that with very little notice things may change.
Finding Acceptance
In finding acceptance it is important to realize that we do not have to like the situation or agree with what is happening. It is realizing that many of these events are out of our control. We can either be upset or we can accept what is. By accepting the situation, this allows us to find peace, which is vital when preparing for a pandemic Christmas. Instead of feeling upset and having no peace, we choose to focus on the things that bring joy to our lives.
Finding Acceptance Changes Perspective
Finding acceptance can change our perspective on Christmas. We can be grateful for what we have, enjoy a different experience and find joy in the season. It can be amazing the small blessings we see around us when we start looking for them.
Opportunities for New Experiences
Even though many of the events that I enjoy are cancelled, there is always the opportunity for new experiences. I have discovered several online concerts to attend during the Christmas season from bands that never come to Calgary. Because of the pandemic, this has given me a new set of experiences this year to enjoy. I am looking forward to something different, realizing that the only reason I have these opportunities is because of the pandemic.
Opportunity to Take it Slow
One of the positive outcomes of less holiday events is it has slowed down my Christmas season. Instead of packing so many events, visits with friends and Christmas traditions in a month, this Christmas is much slower. The slower pace lets me savor and appreciate the experiences more. Instead of rushing through them, I feel like there is more time to enjoy them.
Having the opportunity to make Christmas Cards and even share some of the process videos on this website has been one of the outcomes of taking it slow. I also had the opportunity to purchase fresh greenery and make handmade arrangements for my home.
I often do these activities, but they are often slotted in around a lot of busyness. By taking it slow and being mindful, I feel like the Christmas season is more enjoyable.
Anticipation to Christmas
By preparing for a pandemic Christmas, I have felt more anticipation towards Christmas. As I am a person of faith, the month of December is surrounded by the anticipation of Christmas. There is advent with both daily and weekly celebrations up until Christmas.
There is something special about being able to look forward to the holiday, with anticipation and feelings of peace. If we savor this time, reflecting and finding traditions that help us slow down, we can get more out of the holiday season. So that when Christmas Day comes, it is not just a day that rushes past, but a time of enjoyment that brings connection.
My Hope for You
My hope for you is that this holiday brings with joy, an opportunity for rest and a chance to connect with others, even if it is not in person. This season can sometimes feel lonely, but if we can find acceptance in our situation and find ways to enjoy what is, Christmas can be a very meaningful time.
