How to Paint Watercolor Backgrounds

Have you ever wanted to paint watercolor backgrounds but didn’t know where to start? Do you feel intimidated about trying watercolor painting techniques? In this week’s Creative Foundations video I will be showing you how to effectively paint watercolor backgrounds.

Watercolor as a Self-Care Activity

Watercolor painting is an excellent self-care activity. It is a great foundational technique to use on cards and in journals. I often start cards and journal pages with a watercolor painting. Watercolor makes a great base layer. Not only is it quick and easy to do, the effect is very pleasing to the eye.

Watercolor painting is very relaxing and meditative which helps foster self-care. The wet-on-wet technique that I will be teaching today is very loose painting style. It does not require a lot of precision and it is relaxing to see how the colors blend together.

Making watercolor backgrounds is easy to do and is very versatile. You can add pen and ink drawings and details after the watercolor background has been completed. The additional of stamps, acrylic paint and other mediums on a watercolor background makes for a beautiful mixed media project. You can also write your favorite quote on the background to make a beautiful art piece. The possibilities are endless.

We will finish up this video by stamping a simple image onto a watercolor background. This will leave you with a finished project to be used in your journal or as a greeting card.
