Too Many Gelli Prints? A Fall Project for Using Your Prints

Do you ever make Gelli prints but are unsure on how to use them in a project? Last week I shared a few techniques on printing with the Gelli Arts mini plates. Today I will show you how to use these prints in a project.

Seasons Change

The inspiration for this project was a quote “seasons change and so do we.” I am currently in another season of change and this quote resonated with me. We all go through change. The choice is whether we embrace the change or resist it.

In times of change, taking the time to reflect is important. We should reflect on the past and think about what we want for the future. By embracing change and choosing new opportunities, it can make a difference on how we experience changes in our lives.

Gelli Print Scrapbooking Project

In this scrapbooking project I am using my Gelli prints with fall photos to journal about living in change. These photos were taken at Inglewood Bird Sactuary last fall as the leaves were finishing their color change. I purposely paired the blues of the Gelli prints with the yellows and oranges as they are complimentary colors. This provides contrast and gives the page a dynamic feel.

Arranging Gelli Prints

Start by cutting out and arranging the Gelli prints. I was not very careful when cutting out these prints, so they are no longer perfect hexagons. When arranging these prints, I used a ruler to ensure a straight horizon line. Adding more spacing between the hexagons will compensate for the less than perfect shapes.

When arranging the prints, I included 3 photos cut to a hexagon shape to match the prints. The intent was to add photos as part of the pattern.

Adhere the prints using a clear glue. If you are using heavier paper, use a liquid glue. As these prints were printed on copy paper, a glue stick was high tac enough for adhering the images to the page.

Adding Focal Image and Ephemera

Add the focal image to the page, using the rule of thirds as a guide. When arranging the ephemera, take some time to get the right contrast in colors and patterns. I wanted the eye to move from left to right along the page, so the ephemera was placed in a way that created that movement.

I added the quote over the ephemera so that it was both the title and quote for this page.

Adding Paint Splatters

Add paint splatters to the page using a brush and acrylic paint. I focused on adding the splatters to the white areas. The intent was not to cover up the white, but to add more cohesion between the background and the Gelli prints using common colors on the prints.

Add Journaling

Even on my scrapbook pages I love adding journaling. I feel that no page is complete without the story. Using a silver and orange Gelly Roll pen, I added journaling to the page.

Questions?

There are many ways to add Gelli prints to a page, and I hope that this project idea has provided some inspiration.

I purposely chose a design that could be easily adapted to an art journal or a card. Instead of using photos, you could use other focal images in the place of photos for an art journal. For a card, try scaling down the size of the prints and use a similar pattern with a sentiment.

There is a variety of ways to use these prints on your projects. Please see my article on 4 ideas for using gelli printing in your projects for more Gelli print inspiration.
